Sleepy Hugs: A Review

Mummy Review: I’m always on the lookout for making transitioning baby to better sleep, so it’s a no-brainer when I found this option of Sleepy Hugs as a swaddle transition, that I wanted to try it for my sleep-resistant baby!

As my baby struggles in his sleep and staying in his own safe space, as well as keeping warm, I have been looking for alternatives to the traditional sleeping bags and swaddles. I found this brilliant design of the Sleepy Hugs sleeping bag as a great option for Sleepwear! Built in three different thicknesses for varying seasons, and preventing my baby from scratching his sensitive eczema prone skin, this Sleepwear alternative is a lovely little option for any time of the year!

About the Brand~ Baby Loves Sleep is an Australian brand created by a mum with a desire to make transitioning from a swaddle much easier. Sleepy Hugs was designed to give the security of a swaddled  feeling with the freedom to move at the same time. It’s unique wide Bottom design makes it perfect for babies I hip braces as well! It is available for purchase worldwide.

My Experience~ My baby loved the comfort of the Sleepy Hugs, and I loved his hands being protected from escaping and scratching everywhere! I did find it runs a little big, so for my littlest child it may have been ok to order down a size. The Large 12+ Months size fits my child who is between a size 2-3 nicely. The material is soft and not too thick. I have tried the year round thickness, and it would be perfect for winter, just putting bubs in some nice light clothing underneath. I also have the lighter spring/summer weight, which is a little lighter for the warmer nights.

Overview

The Material~ 95% Cotton (And 5% elastane for the stretch) . The Sleepy Hugs also uses cotton fabrics that have passed the OEKO-TEK standard (this just means no dangerous chemicals have been used in producing the actual textile fabric).^ The material seems breatheable and smooth, good for all year round. I do have a spring/summer material one as well, and this material is a little thinner cotton than the all year round. A winter/fall weight is also available which would be thicker than the year round and spring/summer weights.

The Design~ I love the Sleepy eyes design for either boy or girl. I think it’s simply adorable! They have some lovely prints in each season ranging from pastels to prints.

The Zippers~ The two Zippers allow for middle of the night changing, so great overall for that concept! It makes it so much easier! You can unzip from either side without an issue. Plus, the Zipper goes all the way around the side and bottom, making it much easier to change a sleeping bub! It does have a cover for the top, so the zipper isn’t in baby’s face.

Wide Bottom Shape~ The Sleepy Hugs has a wide bottom shape to fit hip dysplasia brace/harness better (and it has actually been designed with hip dysplasia in mind).^ The wide bottom also gives plenty of room for bubs, and a roomy feel!

Enclosed/Long Sleeve Design~ This is especially beneficial to a baby with eczema like mine, to prevent scratching! This is so helpful, especially with the mainly cotton material. The enclosed sleeve also gives a little resistance to give the security of a swaddle without the restriction. Sleepy Hugs indicates that the largest size gives a bit more freedom to move compared with the smaller sizes.

Sizing~ The Large 12+ Months size seemed a little baggy on my baby in the 12-18 Months range, but it was great for my child in a little bigger sizes (about a size 2) with a little room to spare. It still kept bub inside and prevented him from scratching. I may have been better with a Medium 6-12 Months size. Sleepy Hugs is available in sizes XSmall (0-12 Weeks), Small (3-6 months), Medium (6-12 months), Large (12+ months). The large size gives full range of movement.

Mummy Confessions Scale for Winter Sleep Wear-
Easy to put on: 5/5-
So easy to put on, and with two zippers, you can have it however open you need to put it on your baby or toddler.
Stays on: 5/5- If you get the proper size, it will stay on, and baby can’t really get out. It does tend on the roomy side.
Easy to change baby in: 5/5 – With two zippers, and one that goes all the way around the bottom, simple to change baby in, and baby can’t grab either!
Easy to take off: 5/5- Super easy.
Keeps baby warm in winter: 4.5/5– With the various weights, you can either layer with the all year round sleepy hugs, or pick the autumn-winter weight which is a little thicker. Recommendations are on their website.
Baby likes it? Baby seemed to be ok with it, though he would prefer his feet to be free. It did give enough space to move around a bit though.
Material: 5/5 –I love the breathable cotton and it didn’t feel harsh on the skin.
Sizing: 4.5/5 – The sizing did seem a little big, but I think for my littlest, I just needed a smaller size. It fit my size 2-3 bub perfectly snug. Use the measurements as a guide when picking the proper size.

Overall Rating of Sleepy Hugs: 4.5/5-
Overall, I was happy with the idea of the swaddle transition sleep wear, and the way it prevented my baby from scratching and gave a little resistance not found in other sleepwear. I love the all around zipper and the option for various seasons. The patterns are simple and cute. I think they are a great option, especially for littler ones struggling to sleep at night because of the transition to a regular sleeping bag, or babies struggling with scratching. I think it’s amazing that it was designed with hip braces in mind, because it can be hard to find sleepwear that works with them! I would love to see this with some feet at another point in time for my sleeping bag resistant baby!
